As I rework this site, I’ve been sorting through all the files sitting on the server gathering dust, and was surprised to stumble across these photos.
I painted this screen door years ago, to hide the lovely view of the garage behind it. I primed the screen with Kilz, based with left over Sherwin Williams satin, and stenciled with stencil cremes. The wood is stained with acrylic craft paint thinned with extender. I didn’t seal it because I’m lazy and it’s not really exposed to the elements — it opens to our garage.
I later took a screen stenciling class from Nancy Tribolet, and learned how I could have done it better! For instance, I had trouble getting the tape holding my stencil up to stay in place, but Nancy taught us to use stud earrings instead of tape. She really is a wonderful teacher, so if you ever get the chance to take one of her classes, snap it up!
Nancy’s article says stencil paint, is that what you used on a screen, where do you get that?
Susan, we used Delta stencil cremes in the class I took from Nancy, and that’s what I used on this screen as well. They are available at many crafts stores, and online at stores like MisterArt and JoAnn’s
