Five Fabulous Stenciling Tutorials for the Fourth of July
What are you wearing this weekend? How about some wearable holiday art created with a little patriotic stenciling? The tutorials I’ve gathered for today’s post will have you sporting stenciled stars and stripes from head to toe!
1) Stow&TellU: Patriotic Straw Hats
I did say “head to toe”, so let’s start at the top. In this tutorial, Amy of Stow&TellU shows you how to transform dollar store straw hats with tape, foam stickers, and spray paint.
You might think I’m on a straw hat kick if you’ve seen the garden sign straw hats I made recently. Call it crafty tunnel vision, but I was thinking that some straw hats decorated with stars and stripes would be a cute way of getting patriotic this summer.

2) SheKnows: Patriotic stenciled tees
Kacey of Stay-At-Home Artist put together this tutorial for SheKnows. It uses a freezer paper stenciling technique and the patriotic stencils she designed for the project are available as free pdf downloads (here, and here).
Stenciling using freezer paper is a breeze — anyone can do it! …The plastic coating sticks to fabric when ironed, yet peels off easily, making it the perfect material for creating stencils. You can even run it through your printer!

3) Emi’s Manis: July 4th Manicure – Patriotic Stencil Glitter Stars
And here’s an application for stencils you might not have thought of — Emi of Emi’s Mani’s demonstrates the perfect patriotic manicure!
I like to make and use stencils for nail art because they can make intricate-looking designs with good feature resolution, and they don’t require any complicated freehand techniques. To make the stencils, I used a star-shaped hole punch to cut out stars from some sticky paper for mailing labels.

4) Overstuffed: Easy DIY Patriotic Cutoff Shorts
I love the worn and faded look of these stenciled shorts from Overstuffed blog, and the fact they were created by blogger Lara’s obviously talented daughter. In fact, all three of her girls got in the act, so be sure to visit her tutorial for the big reveal of the trio in their shorts!
So we were shopping a couple weeks ago and Bria fell in love with a pair of denim shorts that had patriotic stars and stripes printed on them… …I told her we could make some ourselves. And that we did.

5) Pretty Providence: DIY Patriotic American Flag Shoes
I did say “head to toe”, right? Well, I meant it. This final tutorial from Daniela Davis via Pretty Providence is sure to give you happy feet as you celebrate Independence Day. She created these snappy sneakers using fabric markers and stencils cut with her Silhouette Cameo.
I’ve got a festive Mommy & Me craft that is SO easy, you don’t even need to make it during nap time. In fact – you can make it while your 18-month old is wide awake, sitting on your lap, trying to grab your marker and pointing at your shoes saying “Star”
