It’s Summer!!! And what better way to start off the season than by giving your patio a much needed refresh?
When I originally wrote this post back in 2010, I had only two stenciled patios to show you. Since then so many patios have been painted and shared through the magic of Pinterest, Houzz, and assorted blogs, that I decided a Stenciled Patio update was in order. Towards that end, I’ve added several examples of stenciled patios and concrete porches to this post as a follow-up.
Stencil Stories: How To Stencil A Pretty Patio
First up are these two examples by Jill Bennett of LJM Design, which she shared with the folks at Cutting Edge Stencils.
We’d like you to meet Jill Bennett, one of our fabulous stencil fans and creative DIYer. Jill recently sent us pics of her stenciled patio and let’s just say that our jaws hit the ground when we saw her space.

LA Times: Carpet of Color
This article from the LA Times gives you step-by-step instructions for stenciling your own colorful carpet. I love the cheery red that Karen and Guy Vidal used on this patio — what a transformation!
When designers Karen and Guy Vidal went to revive a concrete area along the back of an East Hollywood apartment building that they owned, the couple turned to an inexpensive DIY trick: stenciling a “carpet” directly onto the patio.

The House of Wood: Stenciled Concrete Rug
Learn how to use concrete stain and stencils to create an outdoor patio “rug” in this step-by-step tutorial by Jen Woodhouse of The House of Wood.
The patio was old, cracked, and stained (and not in a good way) so simply covering it up (in lieu of major renovation) was always my quick fix. And since I have yet to find an outdoor rug that can take on the Alabama sun and live to tell about it, this stenciled concrete rug was the perfect solution.

Bella Tucker Decorative Finishes: Front Porch Update
Take a look at this fabulous front porch update from Bella Tucker Decorative Finishes, which includes floors stenciled with a graphic design.
We had this amazing stencil from Royal Design Studios blown up to an 18″ repeat. He painted the floor with Sherwin Williams porch and floor paint…
…And then it didn’t feel quite finished. I texted my friend Brandy a photo and she replied back immediately, “You need an amazing vintage elephant stool between the two chairs.” And so I did.

A House Full of Sunshine: Backyard Makeover!
Learn how to paint concrete to look like oversized pavers in this post by Karen of A House Full of Sunshine.
I really wanted to somehow create a tile pattern to make the backyard look like a real entertaining area. I figured if I could paint stripes on a wall, I could create a striped tile pattern on the ground…

Keep Calm and Decorate: Painted Patio Tiles
This tutorial creates a stenciled pattern mimicking patio tiles using paint and tape.
The painted patio was a lot of work but well worth it. I wasn’t sure at the beginning of this project how it would look once it was completed. I am so happy with the results.

Pinterest: KWolfWebb’s Stenciled Patio
This clever patio doesn’t even require paint! It was stenciled by using a pressure washer through a doormat to clean a pattern into the surface!
We did this with a pressure washer and doormats. Reverse graffiti, clean tagging

Stencil Ease: Stenciled Patio
Paint and stencils can help you convert a dull concrete patio into an attractive outdoor living space, and there are a variety of patio stencils available commercially. This stenciled patio was created using Stencil Ease’s Brick Patio stencil kit.
Haley Harmon: Patio Stenciling
Designer Haley Harmon stenciled her patio with a stencil she cut herself from stencil paper, using a large sponge brush and cement paint.

Addendum: Since updating this post I continue to find new examples of stenciled porches and patios, so I’ve saved them to a pinterest board. Take a look!
Wolffwebb’s Reverse stencil literally blew me away….one question though, how did they stop the doormat from moving under the Er pressure of the pressure washer. I LOVE the idea of this one and definitely want to try to do it myself, but just need to know how they kept the mat from moving.
Do you have the Bella Tucker patio stencil that has the decorative elephant in the picture? Interested in buying that particular stencil.
Steve, according to her blog post that’s a custom-sized (18″ repeat) of Royal Design Studios’ Endless Moorish Circles, so I’d recommend contacting Royal Design Studio.
