Faux Finishing Techniques: Moiré

by Pat & Jackie Baxter

  1. Apply desired base coat over properly prepared walls.

  2. Apply glaze with a 3/8" nap roller. Roll 2 or 3 widths of your paint roller floor to ceiling. (Do not use a foam roller for this step).

  3. Remove glaze with a wood graining tool by pulling the tool downward and rocking it. The key here is pulling the tool and rocking it without pausing. If you pause, you will get horizontal streaks in your pattern.

  4. Wipe the tool between passes. A badger brush or softening brush may be used to soften the look by very lightly brushing horizontally, barely touching the surface.

Note: Metallics and White are not recommended for this technique because they dry too quickly.
This is the fifth installment in a series of techniques provided by Lasting Impressions owners Pat and Jackie Baxter. For best results, we recommend using a glaze with an excellent open time, such as Elegant Transformations.
