To form the softly clouded sky in our Castle Bedroom, Muralist Merilee Sawusch used 2 oz. bottles of acrylic craft paint mixed with Floetrol®, a paint conditioner sold at hardware and paint stores. She controlled the transparency of the paint, without changing its consistency, by adjusting the amount of Floetrol®.
Merilee started at the top of the sky using a slightly darker shade of blue, working her way down into the lightest shade at the bottom. She notes that "Additional colors can be blended in to create a sunset or sunrise", as shown in the sky on the door mural scene, right. The Floetrol extends the working time of the paint mixture, allowing for smooth blending.
Clouds were created in the same way, using acrylics in shades of white and the blues, sometimes adding reflected sky colors.
